Best wishes Jim!

As many of you know Jim Billings is leaving the firm on August 12, 2016 to work as Principal Attorney to the State of Maine Department of Transportation.  Jim was the second attorney after Walt to work at McKee Billings and his great work merited the addition of his name to the firm name in 2014.

Jim will be sorely missed as he was a highly respected attorney with the utmost integrity.  All our best in this next chapter Jim!

And for those who are wondering, McKee Billings will revert to the original firm name McKee Law.  Thankfully we kept the old sign and some old letterhead.  Onward!

Trifecta for Walt!

It has been a while since our last news update but this just gives us the opportunity to congratulate Walt in a single announcement for his recent attorney award trifecta as he was once again listed in Best Lawyers in America, named New England SuperLawyer, and earned the coveted Martindale-Hubbell AV Rating!

These three awards are widely considered the preeminent awards for an attorney to receive as they all come from anonymous peer reviews that span the entire bar.  Walt has received these recognitions for the past five years.

Never one to rest, Walt's response to this great news? "Onward!"

Jim Billings Elected President of Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers

Big congratulations to Jim Billings on his recent election as president of the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (MACDL).  Founded in 1992, MACDL is a statewide organization of criminal defense lawyers committed to fairness to those accused of crimes.  MACDL is widely respected in the criminal justice system and throughout Maine government as the leading voice in ensuring that persons accused of crimes are treated fairly.  Becoming the President of MACDL is a great honor.  Congratulations Jim!

McKee Billings is pleased to report that attorney Melissa Reynolds O’Dea has joined the firm! Melissa’s practice focuses on business law, wills and probate matters, gaming law and administrative work before state agencies and licensing boards. Melissa has nearly 20 years of experience in private practice and government. Early in her career she worked in the Maine Attorney General’s Office as an Assistant Attorney General. Her work as an AAG was groundbreaking as she handled multiple complex litigation matters and earned national recognition for her leading role in facilitating a national settlement with tobacco companies that continues to bring millions of dollars to Maine every year. Before joining McKee Billings, she was a partner at two Augusta law firms. Welcome Melissa!

Walter McKee of the Augusta law firm McKee Billings was inducted on February 28 as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the premier legal associations in the United States.

Founded in 1950, the College is composed of the best of the trial bar from the United States and Canada. Fellowship in the College is extended by invitation only and only after careful investigation, and is comprised of experienced trial lawyers who have mastered the art of advocacy and whose professional careers have been marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility, and collegiality. Lawyers must have a minimum of fifteen years trial experience before they can be considered for Fellowship. Membership in the College is limited to one percent of the lawyers in an individual state. In Maine there are only 15 Fellows in the College.

“It is a tremendous honor to be invited to be a Fellow of this prestigious national organization” said McKee.

McKee has been practicing law for 22 years and is a veteran of over 175 criminal and civil jury trials. He is a past president of the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and is Chair of the Maine Ethics Commission.  He is listed in Best Lawyers in America and is a “New England Super Lawyer.”  He holds the coveted AV® rating by Martindale-Hubbell. Walt McKee Addresses Full Maine Legislature on Ethics

Walt recently spoke on legislative ethics before the entire 127th Maine Legislature.  Walt chairs the Maine Ethics Commission, an independent state agency that administers Maine's campaign finance laws, the Maine Clean Election Act, and the lobbyist disclosure law.  It also issues advisory opinions and conducts investigations regarding legislative ethics.  The Commission is bi-partisan and consists of five members jointly appointed by the Governor and Legislative leaders.

This was Walt's third time speaking to the House and Senate members at its mandatory ethics review.  He spoke with Attorney General Janet Mills, with whom he addressed the Legislature on ethical issues at the start of the 125th Legislature.  Walt spoke at the same ethics review in 2012 with then-Attorney General, now Maine District Court Judge, William Schneider.
